About 20-0

We built 20-0 because we kept coming back to one cruel fact about January football: the hardest part of a perfect season is the part most people forget to count. An undefeated regular season is a wonderful story right up until the bracket opens — and then it becomes a countdown. The #1 seed earns a bye, then has to win three straight win-or-go-home games: the Divisional round, the Conference Championship, the Super Bowl. Seventeen wins buys you a seed. It doesn't buy you perfection. That last leg is what 20-0 is about.

Why we stopped at the regular season — and then didn't

This genre — spin an era, draft an all-time roster, chase an unbeaten year — is full of games that declare victory the moment the regular season ends. We understand the temptation; the regular season is where the drama is easy to script. But history is unsentimental about it. The 2007 Patriots went 16-0, then 18-0, and lost the only game that would have made it perfect, finishing 18-1. The 1998 Vikings and 2015 Panthers went 15-1 and never reached the Super Bowl at all. Since the 1972 Dolphins — the only team to finish a whole season, playoffs included, without a loss — every perfect run has died in the postseason. So we made the postseason the point. 20-0 simulates a genuine single-elimination bracket in the NFL's real format, bye and all. Here, "20-0" means what it has always meant on the field: survive and advance, four rounds deep, until there are no games left to lose.
